We don't want Beach Break to be a dark house in the community but to use/share it with others and bring employment and income to the area as best we can. We pay community charge to support local services, engage with and support local community initiatives like the village church, Friends of Bude Seapool, the RNLI Lifeguards and have helped local schools.
We therefore use the house as much as we can but sometimes simply can't afford to and have to rent it out. Because it costs us a lot to keep, maintain and clean the house we have to charge what we can and our rates vary from between £650 off peak to £2,450 a week in the peak summer and school holiday periods.
While a lot of money, it's nothing compared to the cost of leaving the country, parking/renting cars and renting villas of this standard abroad.
And on a good (or bad) day, Cornwall beats anywhere hands down.
Also, remember it sleeps 8/9 so can be split between two families.
We've never been very organised and have never planned our own holidays more than a few weeks in advance so having to think when we'll be using the house a year in advance is a killer for us. We try to get our availability up around the end of the year.
We use the house ourselves around key school holidays, but have to rent it too, usually for most/all of the summer holiday, Christmas or New Year.
We usually try to split half terms by renting it Fri to Weds or Weds to Fri for 80% of weekly rent so we get some use and some income.
We're also particularly keen to let it for weekends and at short notice. Why not have your (grand)parents down for the weekend and let them stay on, with their own friends? While you're renting it, it's your beach house to share!
